Getting your child into a healthy brushing routine can feel like a daily challenge—but it doesn’t have to be! With a little creativity and consistency, you can make brushing a fun, positive habit that sticks with them for life.
Start Early and Keep It Simple
As soon as your child’s first tooth appears, it’s time to start brushing. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a smear of fluoride toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice). At this stage, it’s more about getting them used to the routine than perfect technique.
Make It a Game
Try singing a favorite song while they brush, setting a timer, or using a kid-friendly brushing app. Many children’s toothbrushes even light up or play music to help keep them engaged.
Let Them Take the Lead (With Help)
Encourage your child to hold the toothbrush and try brushing themselves—but always follow up with a quick, thorough brushing from you. As their coordination improves, they’ll eventually be able to take over.
Use Positive Reinforcement
Stickers, charts, and small rewards can go a long way in building excitement around brushing. Praise their efforts often and celebrate milestones.
Lead by Example
Kids love to copy! Brush your teeth together and show them how it’s done.
Teaching your child to care for their teeth early on sets the stage for a lifetime of healthy habits—and fewer dental visits down the road!
