Sometimes, walking down the dental aisle at the grocery store can be overwhelming: so many products; how do you know which ones are the best options!?

Let’s start with the toothbrush. When you pick one out, the most important aspect of the brush is the bristles. Hard bristles cause bleeding and gum damage, whereas soft bristles help get in between teeth, gently. Also, try out the toothbrush in your hand and make sure it is easy to grip and comfortable for using.

Next, let’s talk about toothpaste. Whitening? Baking soda? Mint or bubble gum? You should, primarily, be looking at the fluoride composition of the toothpaste. Also, look for the American Dental Seal of approval which means it has met safety and effectiveness requirements.

Moving on to dental floss. Waxed? Unwaxed? Cinnamon or mint? Dental picks are a great alternative if you struggle to keep the floss in your hands without slipping out. Most dental floss comes waxed or unwaxed; the waxed type is best for tight spaces and teeth that are close together.

Even mouth wash comes in a variety of flavors and preferences! First, decide if you want to cleanse your tongue, eliminate bacteria, freshen your breath, or all 3. Then, look for active ingredients that aid in the process. Some have hydrogen peroxide, and some are alcohol free. If you are trying to prevent future oral issues, use a mouthwash with fluoride. If you prefer something to clear bacteria, look for the ingredient chlorhexidine to get rid of stubborn plaque.

Now, you have the information you need to help you make confident choices about dental products that will give you the most impactful results for your oral health.
